Brief introduction of the ancient and modern monastery——Beijing Longquan Monastery.

Beijing Longquan Monastery is an ancient monastery with a history of over 1000 years, and it is also a modern center of Han Buddhism  which is characterized by internationalization and excellence.

Monastery History and Geographical Location

Beijing Longquan Monastery was founded in the earlier years of the Chinese ancient Liao Dynasty in 951 AD.  After thousands of years of historical development i, witnessing the changes  of  many different dynasties, the monastery was restored as a  site of religious activities for the  public on Apr. 11th, 2005. It is located  in the Phoenix Ridge Natural Park in the Northwest part of Beijing, the capital city of China. It has been a sacred place of spiritual practice since ancient times, and there are still many historical sites remaining  from ancient spiritual practitioners today, such as Dajue Temple, Shangfang Temple, Huangpu House, Miaofeng Nunnery, Chaoyang Cave and so on. Some of the carved Buddha images on the walls are still visible. The Monastery has Beijing’s  oldest existing single-arched stone bridge-the Golden Dragon Bridge , which was built by the first abbot Ven. Master Jisheng. The bridge and the ancient ginkgo tree at the head of the bridge, have witnessed the passage of time and historical changes for thousands of years

The Sangha

There are currently more than 100 monks in Beijing Longquan Monastery , who have been strictly selected and are excellent in the aspects of aspiration, cultivation, moral, ability and knowledge amongst others. n. The Sangha has not only inherited the essence of the traditional monastic  Order, but also absorbed the educational characteristics of  modern Buddhist Academies, and the innovation of the combination of Buddhist learning and preaching internally and externally. With  this vision and sense of mission, the monastery has become known for its “High Quality New Model of Monastic Organisation.”.

The Sangha holds summer retreat every year, and organizes  precept practice activities and recitation of the  Vinaya  twice a month  .In regards to  organizational management, according to the traditional Sangha order and the modern monastic  management system, the Sangha has established two different interdependent management systems for different purposes which are precept-oriented and function-oriented respectively. The precept-oriented management system is classified by levels and dates of  ordination, and is  mainly used for  religious activities.. The function-oriented management system is designed for routine monastic  management, and is distinguished according to administrative hierarchy. .

In Nov. 2013, The Sangha started the Tripitaka Compiling Project based onthe Zaocheng Jin Tripitaka. They  collected an extensive range of  Tripitaka versions , and absorbed   Buddhist writings which have been newly rediscovered  since the 20th century,  as well as carrying out collation  work using traditional research methodology and artificial intelligence technology. The project was completed in Dec. 2015, together with the publication of the “The Compilation Series of the China South Vinaya Classics.” This helped to open the door for people in the modern times to enter into the scriptural treasure trove of Buddhist classics.

Social Responsibility

With many aims, including monastic construction, talent cultivation for both monastics and lay Buddhists, and the development of Buddhism, , eLongquan Monastery has established different functional departments including the Library, the Tripitaka Compilation Office, the Translation Center, the Animation Center, the Charity Department, the Cultural Department and so on. So far the monastery has published and distributed s masterpieces including  the books Monk & Microblog: 365 Days at Beijing Longquan MonasteryUnderstanding Life (in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English, French, Thai, and Vietnamese ),All  Afflictions are brought upon Oneself(Chinese version),Speak in Heartfulness(Chinese Version), andListen in Mindfulness(Chiense version) amongst others. We have also made remarkable group achievements on our comics and cartoon movies, which have been awarded various prizes and won a high reputation domestically and internationally.

Internet, artificial intelligence, and  hi-tech equipment are widely used in our daily routine work at Longquan Monastery. We operate seven websites in seven different languages under the name  “The Voice of Longquan”, and also run several public Wechat accounts. Our library has been open to the public since 2017, with the aid of  advanced IT techniques such as an applied literature database and library lending management system to realize all-round management. During the Tripitaka Compilation Project, artificial intelligence was also   applied to leveraging  machinery learning technology in order to improve the functionality of traditional OCR (optical character recognition) and semantic analysis technologies.  The development of the Robot Monk Xian’er  using combined artificial intelligence  and  big data has been well received by the public. It features sensory functions, can communicate with people fluently and flawlessly in Buddhist contexts and helps to provide positive energy online.

In an age of globalization, the modernized development of Longquan Monastery is not only showcasing the integration and contribution of  Chinese Buddhism to  society, but also offering a way to explore a new human heart centred civilization with the core of t “Heart Culture.”
