Education and work experience

Dr. Xuan Fang was born in Zhuji, Zhejiang Province in 1971. He graduated from Renmin University in 1998 with a doctoral degree in philosophy. He is an associate professor at the Department of Philosophy and Department of Religious Studies and a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study of Religion at Renmin University. He is the executive editor of Religion Column of Renmin University Reprography Archives and Religious Studies. He is also an editorial board member of Hua Lin. His other titles include: senior teacher of International Education Society (IES); assistant director of the Institute for the Study of Buddhism and Religious Theory; deputy director of Research and Communication Department of the Confucius Institute; researcher at the Institute of Confucius of Renmin University; an advisory member of the Research Institute of the Buddhism Culture of China; visiting professor at the Research Centre of Buddhist Culture at Xiamen University, the College of Humanities,Yunnan University,and the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; a researcher at the Research Institute of the Buddhism Culture Of Beijing and the Research Institute of the Buddhism Culture of China; and graduate supervisor at Minnan Buddhist College. He is mainly engaged in the study of the history of Buddhist thoughts and contemporary Chinese Buddhism. Main academic thoughts

Prof. Xuan Fang focuses on the study of Buddhist modernity, political-religious relationship, monastic economy and Buddhist education based on data collected from his survey of monasteries and Buddhist education for the Buddhist Association of China. He actively promotes Buddhist culture in China including Taiwan, US and some Southeast Asian countries.

For example, most Buddhist cultivators at earlier time were interested in Buddhist philosophy only, so might not be serious practitioners.

In an interview, Prof. Xuan Fang said that religious followers should learn to respect and appreciate the value of others. Only on this basis, can they share valuable thoughts and achieve great harmony. Sociologist Fei Xiaotong said: “Appreciation of the beauty of one’s own civilization as well as others’ will enable one to find common ground and achieve the world’s great harmony. When reviewing Buddhist traditions, especially the traditions in three languages (Chinese, Tibetan,and Pali), we should not consider ours (Chinese) to be superior to the other two. China will inevitably shoulder more responsibility in the global economic, politic and cultural framework. We should avoid cultural chauvinism when talking about Asia. He suggested we learn from Yunnan in dealing with the coexistence of Buddhist sects. Buddhism in three languages interacts with each other, while each maintains its distinctness. Therefore he suggests that Buddhist globalization and localization can be promoted at the same time.

His studies mainly cover Buddhist intellectual history, Chinese Buddhism in modern and contemporary times, includingBuddhism and Modernity,Buddhist Education Today,Chinese Buddhism in China Today and the Development Trend. He is also working on Buddhist Translation Collections. Besides, he is interested in Indian Buddhist intellectual history (fundamental Buddhism and Madhyamapratipad) and comparative religious studies.
